Emily Hertz X Mums in Style

Emily Hertz X Mums in Style

We’re delighted to introduce our February Mums in Style guest, Emily Hertz. Emily lives in Atlanta with her husband and three children and is a constant source of inspiration—from her approach to motherhood and personal style to how she dresses Elle, Jennings, and George.

Join us as we chat about Emily’s favourite family activity, her go-to gift ideas for a new arrival, and her spring/summer wish list.

Balance:

C: How do you strike the balance between work and motherhood?

E: One of my mentors once told me that glory of life is in the imperfection. I’m working to embrace the fact that there is never truly a balance – I’m just doing my best as we all are! I have tried to start working as soon as the kids are dropped off at school and being as productive as possible. I run carpool, so I also work when I’m in line and waiting for the kids during their activities. Some days I get more done than others!

C: Favourite way to unwind?

E: A day at the spa never hurts! Because I can’t get there often, I like to lie on a heating pad at night - it’s oddly relaxing.

C: What’s the one thing about motherhood that no one ever told you?

E: The various stages are so fleeting and you’ll hardly remember them once they’re gone.

C: What does your perfect evening look like?

E: Getting the kids all dressed up, then going to dinner at Le Bilboquet with my family.

Family time:

C: Favourite family activity?

E: Dance parties, particularly on New Year’s Eve. It has become our tradition!

C: Favourite bedtime story?

E: All three children love to read Madeline. Her line to the tiger at the zoo is a favorite of the boys in particular.

C: Favourite Spring activities in Atlanta?

E: We adore touring Swan House - it’s Atlanta’s most beautiful historic home and is a lovely museum with lots of activities for the children as well.

Style:

C: Do you think your style has changed since having children?

E: My style has evolved in that I’m more confident in my choices, but I always come back to the same three words: sophisticated, feminine and ethereal. At various moments of motherhood, differing words have taken priority. For example when I was pregnant, my style was much more ethereal and flowy. It’s now back to more sophisticated and structured - but elements of all three cascade no matter the season.

C: What is your approach to transitional seasonal dressing? Both your own wardrobe and the children’s.

E: I am big into layering jackets for the boys - I especially love sweaters and cardigans so no matter if they take off an outer piece, they still look pulled together and sophisticated. It’s also a good place to invest because it makes everyone look finished. I follow the same strategy for myself and I am very into jackets and coats.

C: What are staples for your children’s new season wardrobes?

E: As Elle gets older she gravitates towards separates unless it’s a special occasion, and she will humour me and wear a dress. I love knee high socks, shorts and fancy tops on the boys so I will be stocking up.

Gifting:

C: Go-to gift ideas for a new arrival?

E: My babies live in your knitwear - it’s absolutely the most perfect gift. My only wish is the knitwear extended to children’s sizes as I would still have my boys living in those sweet sets.

C: Three essentials you always have in your handbag?

E: Hand sanitizer, hair clip and lately, invisible ink pens with UV light which the children adore in a pinch

C: What’s on your La Coqueta Wish List from the Spring/Summer collection?

E: One of everything, please!
